HISTORY
1922 The College is born on 19th June. Founded by His Lordship Rt Rev Dr Thomas Kurialacherry and affiliated to Madras University , it starts as a Second-Grade College and is housed in the old seminary building at Parel. To begin with, the College offers only Group III of the Intermediate Course and has on its rolls only 125 students. Rev Fr Mathew Purackal M A is the first Principal.
1925 Group I and II of the Intermediate Course are introduced. The College is moved into new premises on the present site during the administrator ship of  Rt Rev Msgr Jacob Kallarackal.
1927 The College becomes First Grade, offering Botany and Zoology at the Degree level.
1928      Rev Dr James Kalacherry, Lecturer in Logic, becomes Bishop and Patron.   B A Mathematics is introduced.
1934      The ground floor of the Science Block is completed. Affiliation is granted for   B A Economics.
1935 Rev Fr Mathew Purackal retires from service and Rev Fr A C Eapen M A  Ph D acts as Principal.
1936 Rev Fr Romeo Thomas T O C D, M A LT is appointed Principal.
1937 The College Arts Club presents Macbeth.
1938 Syriac and Sanskrit are offered under Part II of the Degree Course and Syriac for the Intermediate. The University of Travancore is established and junior classes are affiliated to the new University.
1939 Senior classes are affiliated to the University of Travancore .
1940 Rt Rev Msgr Jacob Kallarackal, Vicar General, donates Rs. 9,000 for a chapel and an assembly hall.        Christ the King's Chapel is built and the old Gymnasium is enlarged and converted into the Msgr Kallarackal HaIl. There is expansion for the playgrounds and premises. St. Joseph 's and St Thomas Hostels are established.
1944      Rev. Fr Romeo Thomas leaves service to join the Sacred Heart College , Thevara. Rev. Fr Thomas       William TOCD, M A  L T is appointed Principal. Rev Fr A C Eapen retires from Vice-Principal ship and Rev Fr P C Mathew M A is appointed in his place.
1945 Affiliation for B Sc Physics is granted. Newman Hostel is established.
1947 Macbeth is staged.
1950 Rev Fr Mathew Kavukattu, Lecturer and Hostel warden becomes Bishop and Patron.
1951        Affiliation is granted for B.Sc. Chemistry. The ground floor of the Science Building is extended to house the Intermediate Laboratory. The Merchant of Venice is produced.
1952       The Silver Jubilee of the Natural Science Department is celebrated. A grand Science Exhibition and College Day celebrations are inaugurated by H H the Rajapramukh. King Lear and The Merchant of Venice are staged.
1955     Rev Fr William retires and Rev. Fr. P.C. Mathew takes over as Principal. Rev. Fr Francis Kalacherry is appointed Vice-Principal. Hamlet is staged.
1956 The services of Rev. Fr. Francis Kalacherry are lent to Mar Ivanios College , Thiruvananthapuram as Principal. Rev Dr N A Thomas is appointed Vice-Principal. The Intermediate course ends and Pre-University Course starts.
1957 The Three-Year Degree Course is started. The College is selected to run the Pre-Professional Course. Post Graduate Course in Economics is started.
1960 The Open Air Theatre and the Guest House are constructed. Post Graduate Course in Malayalam begins.
1961 Rev. Fr. P.C. Mathew retires. Rev. Fr Francis Kalacherry rejoins College as Principal. Rev. Fr Kuriakose Aenekatt is appointed Vice- Principal. Postgraduate Courses in Physics and Botany are started. The Science building is again extended. King Lear is staged.
1962 Hobby Workshop and Non - Resident Students Centre (with U. G. C. aid) are established.
1963 NCC Shooting Range (with UGC aid) is ready for use. B.Com. course is started.
1964 Sahrudaya Hostel is established. Affiliation is given for M.Sc. Chemistry and B. A. English Language and Literature. The Pre Degree Course begins. The college celebrates the nomination of the Principal, Msgr. Kalacherry as Papal Chamberlain. The services of Rev. Fr. Antony Kurialacherry are lent to Nirmalagiri College Koothuparampu, as Principal. The College Arts Club celebrates Shakespeare Quarter centenary and stages Othello.
1965 The services of Rev. Fr. Kuriakose Aenekatt are lent to St. Dominic's College Kanjirappally as Principal. Rev. Fr. Mathew Pulickaparampil assumes the Vice - Principal ship. Affiliation is granted for M.Sc. Mathematics and M. Sc. Zoology. Three storeys of the new Biology Block are completed. Rev. Fr. William, former Principal, passes away. The College Development Programme is launched. A grand Science Exhibition and Arts Festival are organised. The exhibition is inaugurated by H. E. Pattom Thanupillai, Governor of Andhra Pradesh. Othello is staged. The College Office and the Department of Zoology are moved into the Biology Block. The Economics Seminar Hall is inaugurated.
1966 Re-organized B.A, B.Sc. and Special B.Sc. Courses begin. A soil-testing unit is started, attached to the Department of Chemistry.
1967 Affiliation is granted to M.A. English Language and Literature. The new Biology Block is blessed and formally opened by H.Em. Cardinal De Furstenburg.
1969 Rev. Fr. P.C. Mathew, Former Principal passes away. The Arts Club produces Macbeth.
1970 The Basketball Stadium is built. Very Rev. Msgr. Francis Kalacherry retires from service and Rev. Fr. Mathew Pulickaparampil acts as Principal. Rev. Dr. Antony Kurialacherry rejoins College as Principal. The services of Prof. D. Varghese are lent to St. Dominic's College, Kanjirappally, as Principal.
1971 Rev. Fr. A.C. Eapen B.A. Ph.D. leaves on July 6th for his home parish after 36 years of Service as Vice-Principal, Acting Principal and Spiritual Director. Macbeth is staged. The foundation stone of Archbishop Kavukattu Hall is laid by His Grace Mar Antony Padiyara on August 15.
1972 Golden Jubilee Year.  Rev Fr Joseph Powathil, Lecturer in Economics, is appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese. Foundation stones of the new Library building and Staff Quarters are laid by his Lordship Rev. Dr. Joseph Powathil and Rt. Rev. Msgr. L.J. Chittoor respectively.
1973 The new Library Building is blessed. The magnificent three storeyed Staff Quarters is blessed by his Lordship Rev. Dr. Joseph Powathil.  The massive auditorium, Archbishop Kavukattu Hall, with a seating capacity of three thousand, is completed. At a colourful and solemn function, attended by the staff and students of St. Berchmans' and Assumption Colleges, the auditorium is blessed by His Grace the Archbishop. Golden Jubilee Celebrations begin. Various conferences, arts festivals and intercollegiate competitions for the Golden Jubilee Challenge Trophies are held. The valedictory session is inaugurated by His Excellency N.N. Vanchoo, Governor of Kerala.
1975 St. Berchmans' College is chosen member of the International Federation of Catholic Universities, one among the seven selected from India and three from Kerala. Kalidasa centenary is celebrated with a symposium on Kalidasa and a production of Sakunthalam. 
1977 Rev. Dr. Joseph Powathil, President of the Managing Board becomes the first Bishop of the New Diocese of Kanjirappally. Rev. Dr. Antony Kurialacherry leaves for Delhi as the Executive Director of Caritas India . Rev. Fr. Mathew Pulickaparampil takes charge as Principal. The College is selected by the UGC as one of the lead Colleges. Rev. Fr. A.C. Eapen former Logic Professor, Principal and Spiritual father passes away on 27th December 1977.
1979 Rt. Rev. Dr. L. J. Chittoor, former Logic Lecturer, Vicar General and Manager of the College passes away on 4 June 1979. The shift system is introduced for the Pre Degree Course.
1980 A spacious dining hall for Sahrudaya Hostel is built.
1981 The Students' Center is enlarged with UGC aid. Prof. A.E. Augustine is appointed Vice - Principal of the college with effect from the month of July.  Affiliation is granted for M Com.
1982 Diamond Jubilee Year
1983 Rev Fr Kuriakose Aenekat, former Vice-Principal, English Professor and Warden, passes away on 7 March.  Prof A E Augustine retires as Vice-Principal. Gandhiji University is established and the college is affiliated to the new university
1984 Rev Dr Joseph M T Maroor is appointed Vice-Principal of the college.  M Sc Analytical Chemistry begins.
1985 Rev Fr Mathew Pulickaparampil retires and Rev Dr Joseph M T Maroor takes over as Principal.  Rev Dr George Madathiparampil takes charge as Vice-Principal and Bursar.  Rev Fr Gregory Paruvaparampil is appointed Principal of St Aloysius College Edathua.  His Grace Mar Antony Padiyara, patron is transferred to Ernakulam as the Metropolitan Archbishop of Ernakulam.
1986 His Grace Mar Joseph Powathil takes charge as Patron.  The Departments of English, Physics, Botany and Zoology are made research centers under Gandhiji University .  Very Rev Msgr Mathew Pulickaparmpil is appointed President of the Managing Board.
1986-87 A grand Industrial & Science Exhibition and Arts Festival (November 14 December 2, 1986) are organized in connection with the Diamond Jubilee of the starting of the Natural Science Courses and the Silver Jubilee of P G Courses.  Mr Giani Zail Singh, the President of India inaugurates the celebrations on August 31 and lays the foundation stone of the Research Centre.  The Arts Club presents Macbeth in November.  A Benefactors’ club is organised.  The annual meeting of the Club is held on August 13, St Berchmans' Day every year.
1987-88 The Silver Jubilee Celebration of the ordination of Archbishop Mar Joseph Powathil is held and an endowment is instituted by the staff toward scholarships in memory of the Jubilee.  The Silver Jubilee Celebration of the ordination of Rev Dr Joseph Maroor, Principal, is held and an endowment is instituted by the staff in memory of the Jubilee.  His Eminence Cardinal Lourd Swami visits the campus in connection with the Centenary Celebrations of the Archdiocese.
1989 The Arts Club presents Julius Caesar.
1990 The foundation stone of the Research Centre is blessed by His Grace Mar Joseph Powathil.  The Silver Jubilee of the Sahrudaya Hostel is celebrated. 
1991 The Research Center is blessed by His Grace Mar Joseph Powathil.  The main Seminar Hall is named Archbishop Powathil Priestly Jubilee Memorial Hall.  Rev Dr Joseph Maroor, Principal retires.  Rev Dr George Madathiparampil is appointed Principal.  Prof K J George takes over as Vice Principal.  Rev Fr Antony Kadavil is appointed Bursar.  Msgr Francis Kalacherry, former Principal, passes away on 27 June.  The Arts Club presents Othello.  Our Principal Rev Dr George Madathiparampil is elected member of the Executive Council of the International Federation of Catholic Universities in Paris .
1992 Prof K J George retires as Vice-Principal, and Rev Fr Joseph Vattakalam is appointed in his place.  Scinex-92 Science and Industrial Exhibition is held in connection with the Seventieth Jubilee celebrations of the college.  Hon Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Sivaraj Patil inaugurates the celebrations.  Executive Council meeting of the International Federation of Catholic Universities held in the S B Campus. 
1993 Rev Dr Mathew Punchayil is appointed Bursar.
1994 Very Rev Fr Jos P Kottaram is appointed President of the Managing Board.  Rev Dr George Madathiparampil is elected President of All India Association for Christian Higher Education.  Research Centre in Malayalam is inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor, Dr A Sukumaran Nair.  Foundation stone for the New Block blessed by Archbishop Mar Joseph Powathil.   Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet staged by the Arts Club.
1995 Rev Dr Philips Wadakekalam was deputed to Marian College , Kuttikanam, as Principal of the College.  Centre for Durrel Studies inaugurated.  Centre for Kamala Das studies opened.  The new MBA Block blessed by the Archbishop Mar Joseph Powathil.  Berchmans’ Institute of Management studies inaugurated.  Language Laboratory and Environmental Research Laboratory opened.
1996 Msgr Mathew Pulickaparampil, former Principal, passes away on 7th January 1996.  S B College wins the first R Sankar Award for the Best Special Grade Private College in the State.  Rev Dr George Madathiparampil, Principal, retires.  Rev Dr Joseph Vattakalam takes charge as Principal and Rev Dr Mathew Punchayil appointed Vice-Principal.  Platinum Jubilee is celebrated.  Antony and Cleopatra Staged. Sahrudaya Hostel is bifurcated to form the new St Berchmans' Hostel.  Rev Fr Jose Viruppel is appointed Bursar.
1997 Valedictory Meeting, Platinum Jubilee Celebrations.  Valedictory address, Shri K R Narayanan, Hon’ble Vice President of India. The college wins the Second R Sankar Award. 
1998 RevDr Joseph Vattakalam retires as Principal.  Rev Dr Philips Wadakekalam takes over as Principal.  Rev Fr ThomasKodinattukunnel and Rev Fr Tom Kunnumpuram take charge as Vice-Principals. The Alumni Association, Kuwait Chapter, institutes St Berchmans’ Award for the best teacher in affiliated colleges in Kerala. S B College starts Masters Degree in Non    Conventional Energy, opens a well-equipped computer lab, launches Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Applications under the aegis of Mahatma Gandhi University Distance Education.
1999 St Berchmans’ College, having procured a High Court Order, introduces the Parliamentary system of elections to the College Union free of political affiliations.   Sri Padmanabha Dasa, His Highness Marthanda Varma Uthradam Thirunal presents the St Berchmans’ Award for the best teacher in affiliated colleges.  As part of the quarter centenary of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the College Arts Club puts up the play which runs into three shows. The peer team of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), an autonomous body of the UGC, visits St Berchmans’ College and confers on the college the most enviable FIVE STAR status.  St Berchmans’ commences its 13th postgraduate course – MSc in Polymer Chemistry
2000 The College Library is enhanced to the tune of 1,11871 books.      Fr Tom Kunnumpuram is reappointed and Prof Joseph Tito is appointed as Vice-Principals.  St Berchmans’ College receives the GNN Award for Excellence in Education for the year 1999-2000.
2001 In a bid to reanimate the past and revitalize the present, the Department of Malayalam makes and installs the ‘Millennium Mega Winnow’. SB starts: (1) BA in Vocational English, (2) B Sc Biotechnology (Sponsored by the UGC) under the department of Botany, (3) Master of Computer Applications, (4) MSc in Information Technology and MA Multimedia– all affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, and MS in Information Technology affiliated to MS University, Tirunelveli.  Fr Jose Viruppel is relieved from office as Bursar and Fr Gigy Mullamkuzhy assumes office.  Revd Dr Antony Kurialasserry, Principal from 1970 to 1977, expires on 26 August.
2002 The UGC sanctions financial assistance to set up a National Environmental Studies Centre in the Dept of Chemistry and also to start the M Phil course in the same subject.  The Department of Science and Technology, Govt of India, and the DAAD Foundation of Germany in a joint venture, recognize the Department of Chemistry as a Centre of Excellence. 
By virtue of this recognition, the Dept of Chemistry, SB College and Martin Luther King University, Germany are qualified to exchange their research scholars to pursue research activities with the help of national scholarships.Rev DrPhilipsWadakekalam receives the Best College Principal Award instituted by Dr M V Pylee Foundation.
Rev Dr Philips Vadakekalam retires from   service     and    Rev Fr Tom Kunnumpuram assumes office as  Principal. Prof Joseph Tito is re-appointed and Prof Stephen Mathews is appointed as Vice-Principals.UGC sponsored B Sc Industrial Micro Biology coursestarts in the department of Zoology. 80th foundation day      celebrated.
2003 Human Resources Development Department Started. Berchmans International Film Festival conducted
2004 The UGC identifies the college as a 'College with Potential for Excellence'. MLISc and MSc. Biochemistry (Dept of Zoology) courses started.
2005 His Excellency Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam, The President of India visits the college
2006 NAAC Reaccredited the college at A+ level
2008 Recognized as Partner Institute of IGNOU ; Opens Gandhian Study Centre.
