A glowing example of the farsightedness and commitment of St. Berchmans College in the field of higher education, the Career Orientation Centre had its inception in 1992. The primary objective of enlightening the student community about the scope of higher education and the employment opportunities that open up from time to time, later widened to incorporate a variety of coaching programmes. The IACHE and Students’ Service Department of M.G. University have extended assistance throughout its development. The objectives of the Centre are (1) to collect and disseminate information on courses, higher studies and employment opportunities in India and abroad. (2) to collect and disseminate information on scholarships, fellowships and financial assistance available in India and abroad (3) to render vocational guidance to students individually and in groups and (4) to impart orientation and guidance for preparing for competitive examinations conducted by UPSC, state PSC, BSRB, Staff Selection Commission, UGC/CSIR and other institutions. It also conducts courses in computer software, computer hardware and Business Management. At the time of its establishment it was housed on the ground floor of the library building.Rev. Fr. Thomas Mattappally, the Librarian was appointed Director of the Career Orientation Centre. It was shifted from the Library to the Research Centre and thereafter to the cellar floor of the Management Block in order to facilitate its functioning with the help of sufficient infrastructural facilities. In 2001 with the advent of the Off Campus Courses various courses were started under the auspices of the Career Orientation Centre. They included B.B.A, B.C.A, M.C.A, M.Sc. I T and B.Com with Computer. The Southern Block of Newman Hostel was chosen as the venue for conducting the classes. A well-equipped computer laboratory was set up in 2001. The COC imparts to our students information on education and job possibilities in India and abroad; provides training in public speaking and leadfership. It also gives coaching in foreign languages( German, French and Italian).It gives coaching for various competetive examinations conducted by KPSC and UPSC. |
