The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) propose that every accredited institution would establish an Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) as a post-accreditation quality sustenance measure. Since quality enhancement is a continuous process, the IQAC would become a part of an institution’s system and work towards realizing the goals of quality enhancement and sustenance. The prime task of the IQAC is to develop a system for conscious, consistent and catalytic improvement in the performance of institutions. It is not yet another hierarchical structure or record-keeping exercise in the institution; it is a facilitative and participative voluntary system/unit/organ of the institution. The Internal Quality Assurance Cell of the College was established in June 2004. The cell played pivotal role in preparing the college for its first reaccreditation in 2005- 06. In the post re-accreditation period, it developed a system for conscious, consistent and catalytic improvement in the performance of the institution. In 2006-07, a roadmap, which would poise the College for international recognition was prepared and communicated to the Management. It conducted an internal academic audit of the various departments and units in 2007-08. Also, the same year, self appraisal by teachers, student feedback on teachers and teacher feedback on college functioning were collected and analysed. In 2008- 09, the cell arranged for an external audit of the academic activities of the College. Furthermore, it introduced the Department wise Master Register- an innovative practice which would help the departments towards timely and efficient documentation. Also, it collected feedbacks from students and teachers and self appraisal reports from teachers. The Cell played a central role in preparing proposals for PG grant, UG and Basic Development Grant and the CPE second phase grant of the University Grants Commission in its XI plan period. In 2009- 10, the Cell continued all the healthy practices introduced by it in the previous years. Towards the end of the academic year, it conducted an internal academic audit of the departments and units. At the outset of the current year, as the validity of the reaccreditation status expires in May 2011, the IQAC decided to opt for the second reaccreditation of the institution and a steering committee was formed for preparing the reaccreditation report before 31 March 2011. It performed a criterion wise SWOT analysis and the outcome was communicated to the Management. In January 2011, for promoting student participation in all the quality enhancement activities, the Cell organised a NAAC sponsored National Seminar on Student Participation for the Quality Enhancement of Higher Education Institutions. In St. Berchmans College, with the support and cooperation of all the stakeholders, we believe that the IQAC has the potential to become a vehicle for ushering in quality by working out intervention strategies to remove deficiencies and enhance quality.
