About UMC

Dr. Joshy John on behalf of the friends, students and relatives of Prof. Ulahannan Mappila founded the centre in 2004. It has a three storied facility which includes a digital theatre/seminar hall, a library and reading hall.

The centre promotes research studies in the field of language, literature and culture of Kerala and interdisciplinary studies. It functions as the Research centre of the Department of Malayalam, ST. Berchman’s College, Changanacherry, Kerala, which is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi Univerisity, Kottayam, Kerala.

Prof. P.V. Ulahannan Mappila

The first Syrian Christian from Travancore with an MA degree in Malayalam, he worked for over four decades at the Department of Malayalam and Oriental Studies at St. Berchman’s college, Changanacherry. A tenure which helped him contribute to the language immeasurably.

The Man

  • Took BA in Malayalam from Maharaja’s Arts College (presently University College), Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
  • Joined the Department of Malayalam & Oriental Languages in S.B. College in 1930.
  • Took Diploma in Library Science in 1931.
  • Received MA in Malayalam from Madras University in 1934.
  • UGC awards for 1970-73.

Dr. Joshy John

The Elder son of late prof Ulahannan Mappila and Mary Ulahannan. He graduated in medicine in 1964 and came to the UK in 1967. Here he completed his higher training in medicine including Doctor of Medicine (MD) at the university of Sheffield and worked as a Consultant Physician. Wife: Mrs Tresa John, D/o of late KJ Jacob Tarayil. Children: Mr. Jaison Joseph John, Mr. James George John and Late Mary Anne John Stuttgen.
